QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

Squirrel(songshu) has high breeding rate, and rat(shu) represents zi(son) in the 12 Earthly Branches; grapes grow in cluster; squirrel(songshu) also sounds similar to pine tree(songshu) which is a symbol of longevity. ‘Squirrel and grapes’ is used to wish people longevity, fecundity and prosperity.
